José Vicente de Faria Lima (7 October 1909 — 4 September 1969) was a Brazilian military engineer and later politician. ==Biography== Lima was born in Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 21 Faria Lima started his military career in the Brazilian Air Force, he was ranking Brigadeiro do Ar by 1958. Before, during the time he was at the Military College, he proved to be an outstanding student. During the 1930s, together with Eduardo Gomes and others, flew through the country inland, working for the Mail Air Lines. At FAB he studied to be a military pilot, watcher and aeronautical engineer, specializing in engineering at the Superior College of Aeronautics in France. Participated in the creation of Ministério da Aeronáutica, during the time as a technical assistant for Minister Salgado Filho. He was chief of the Aeronautical Commission in USA and commander of Campo de Marte. Requested by Jânio Quadros he took over the presidency of VASP. In March 1965, Faria Lima was elected mayor of São Paulo. By the end of 1968 he joined the extinct ARENA. Faria Lima's administration was distinguished by the number of construction projects, among the most notable were: Marginais Tietê and Pinheiros, Avenida Sumaré, Radial Leste, 23 de Maio, Rubem Berta, the beginnings of São Paulo's subway system, the Metrô, and also improvements in the health system, education, social services, etc. It was during his administration that the trolley service was discontinued in São Paulo.
